# UAIX `.uaix` Memory Package Specification Draft

Status: Draft v0.1

## Purpose

`.uaix` is a portable UAIX memory package file for desktop AI clients. It lets a
person save, share, copy, back up, and load a named AI operating/memory package
such as `HelpfulAssistant.uaix`, `PlaywrightExpert.uaix`, or
`ShakespeareNovelist.uaix`.

Loading a `.uaix` file expands ordinary UAIX `.uai` files into an isolated local
profile. A desktop client can run multiple app instances at the same time, with
each instance loading a different `.uaix` package.

## Container

- File extension: `.uaix`
- Container format: ZIP
- Required for registered media type: `application/vnd.uaix.memory-package+zip`
- Character encoding for text files: UTF-8
- Path separator inside ZIP: `/`
- Required top-level package root: `.uai/`

The package must be copyable as a single file. A conforming reader must not
require a hosted service, account, cloud sync, public website import, or hidden
database to read the package.

## Required Files

A minimal `.uaix` package must contain:

```text
.uai/manifest.uaix.json
.uai/startup-packet.uai
.uai/system-profile.uai
.uai/receiver-brief.uai
```

These align with the UAIX memory package model where startup packet, system
profile, and receiver brief are visible local operating files.

## Required For Full Memory Package Files

```text
.uai/short-term-memory.uai
.uai/long-term-memory.uai
.uai/totem.uai
.uai/taboo.uai
.uai/talisman.uai
.uai/archives/
.uai/exports/
.uai/wiki/docs/
```

`archives/` is for raw or source evidence carried with the package. `exports/`
is for machine-readable projections. `wiki/docs/` is the package
hint for long-term wiki memory, and the desktop client must expand durable
memory into a file-native LLM Wiki folder under the user's local docs-backed
memory root.

## Manifest

The manifest file is `.uai/manifest.uaix.json`.

Required For Minimal Import Fields:

```json
{
  "schema": "https://uaix.org/schemas/uaix-package.v0.1.json",
  "packageKind": "uaix.memory-package",
  "packageVersion": "0.1",
  "displayName": "HelpfulAssistant",
  "profileId": "helpful-assistant",
  "createdUtc": "2026-06-14T00:00:00Z",
  "uaiRoot": ".uai/",
  "requiredFiles": [
    ".uai/startup-packet.uai",
    ".uai/system-profile.uai",
    ".uai/receiver-brief.uai"
  ],
  "longTermMemory": {
    "mode": "portable-docs",
    "defaultPath": ".uai/wiki/docs/",
    "canUseExternalWikiRoot": true
  },
  "capabilities": {
    "canOverrideCoreSafetyPolicy": false,
    "canEnableTools": false,
    "canEnableNetwork": false,
    "canEnablePaidProviderApis": false,
    "canAutoExportMemory": false
  }
}
```

Required For Share-Ready Metadata:

When a `.uaix` package is intended to be shared with another person or copied
to another system, the manifest must also include:

```json
{
  "description": "Friendly desktop assistant profile.",
  "author": "Example Person",
  "license": "CC-BY-4.0",
  "source": "local",
  "packageSha256": "",
  "files": [
    {
      "path": ".uai/startup-packet.uai",
      "sha256": "",
      "bytes": 0,
      "role": "startup-packet"
    }
  ],
  "portableWikiRoots": [
    {
      "id": "helpful-assistant-docs",
      "path": ".uai/wiki/docs/",
      "mode": "isolated",
      "copyPortable": true
    }
  ]
}
```

## Desktop Load Model

Importing and loading are separate.

1. Import validates the `.uaix` file and expands it into a local profile.
2. Load selects one imported profile for one app instance/session.
3. Multiple desktop app instances can load different `.uaix` packages at the
   same time.
4. Loading a package must not create one global active profile for all app
   instances.

Required For Desktop Import Expansion:

```text
%LOCALAPPDATA%/LocalEndpoint/Connect/Memories/Profiles/<profile-id>/.uai/
```

Required For Per-Instance Session Tracking:

```text
%LOCALAPPDATA%/LocalEndpoint/Connect/Memories/Sessions/<session-id>.json
```

The session record must point to the loaded profile and the selected
long-term wiki root.

## Long-Term Wiki Memory

Long-term wiki memory must dogfood the LLMWikis.org guidance: it must be a
file-native, agent-ready wiki with raw evidence separated from reviewed wiki
pages, visible agent rules, source/trust policy, a navigable index, and a
change log. The `.uaix` package carries the operating profile; the LLM Wiki
folder carries durable memory that must be easy to back up, inspect, copy, and
move.

Required For Isolated Long-Term Memory Roots:

```text
%LOCALAPPDATA%/LocalEndpoint/Connect/Memories/LongTermWiki/docs/Profiles/<profile-id>/
```

Required For Shared Long-Term Memory Roots:

```text
%LOCALAPPDATA%/LocalEndpoint/Connect/Memories/LongTermWiki/docs/Shared/<wiki-id>/
```

A desktop client must allow a load session to choose either:

- isolated wiki docs for that `.uaix` profile, or
- a named shared wiki docs folder used by multiple profiles.

This lets a programming agent keep programming long-term memory separate from a
Shakespeare novelist agent, while still allowing deliberate sharing when wanted.

Wiki memory must use an LLMWikis Profile C style scaffold by default:

```text
README.md
AGENTS.md
TRUST_MODEL.md
SOURCE_POLICY.md
raw/
raw/README.md
wiki/
wiki/index.md
wiki/log.md
wiki/topics/
wiki/topics/README.md
wiki/sources/
wiki/sources/README.md
exports/
exports/README.md
```

`raw/` stores source material and unreviewed evidence. `wiki/` stores reviewed,
normalized memory. `wiki/index.md` is the load entry point for humans and
agents. `wiki/log.md` records additions, corrections, contradictions, source
policy changes, redactions, and migrations.

A conforming client must not store the only copy of long-term memory in an
opaque database. A database index can exist, but the portable document folder is
the source of truth for backup and transfer.

If current LLMWikis.org guidance conflicts with this draft, treat this draft as
stale for the wiki portion: record the contradiction in `wiki/log.md`, preserve
the older source in `raw/`, update `AGENTS.md`/`SOURCE_POLICY.md` after user
approval, and migrate the wiki forward without silently rewriting user memory.

## Security And Trust Boundary

A `.uaix` package is memory, not authority.

A conforming client must not allow package contents to:

- override core safety policy;
- enable command execution;
- enable network access;
- enable paid/provider APIs;
- collect credentials;
- upload memory;
- mutate protected anchors without explicit user approval;
- read arbitrary filesystem locations by instruction alone.

Protected anchors such as `.uai/totem.uai`, `.uai/taboo.uai`, and
`.uai/talisman.uai` can be included as profile memory, but they do not override
the client's own safety policy.

## ZIP Validation Rules

A conforming importer must reject a package when:

- any path is absolute;
- any path contains `..`;
- any path escapes `.uai/`;
- required files are missing;
- unsupported executable/script file types are present;
- uncompressed size exceeds client policy;
- file count exceeds client policy;
- manifest JSON is invalid;
- declared hashes do not match package contents when hashes are provided.

Required For Package Import File Extensions:

```text
.uai
.json
.md
.txt
```

Executable files and raw code bundles must not be accepted as memory package
content.

## Portability Requirements

A `.uaix` package must be useful after copying to another machine.

Required portability behavior:

- package paths are relative;
- no machine-specific absolute path is required;
- long-term wiki memory has a copyable LLM Wiki docs folder;
- package manifest identifies profile and wiki roots;
- import creates local folders if missing;
- import never requires UAIX.org or any public website to be online.

Required For Backup Transfer Unit:

```text
HelpfulAssistant.uaix
HelpfulAssistant.wiki.docs.zip
```

The `.uaix` file carries operating memory and profile metadata. The wiki docs
ZIP carries long-term memory when it is large or intentionally shared across
profiles.

## Versioning

This draft uses:

```json
{
  "packageVersion": "0.1"
}
```

Future versions must remain additive when possible. Readers must ignore unknown
manifest fields and fail closed on unknown capability requests.

## Non-Goals

`.uaix` does not define:

- hosted inference;
- cloud sync;
- certification;
- automatic repository writes;
- automatic LLM Wiki synchronization;
- tool permission grants;
- model weights or model runtime packaging.

Model packages and runtime workers must use separate package and verification
flows.

Why This File Exists

This is a memory-system evidence file from uaix.org. It is shown here because AIWikis.org is demonstrating the real source files that make the UAIX / LLM Wiki memory system work, not only summarizing those systems after the fact.

Role

This file is memory-system evidence. It records source history, archive transfer, intake disposition, or another piece of provenance that should be retrievable without becoming an unsupported public claim.

Structure

The file is structured around these visible headings: UAIX .uaix Memory Package Specification Draft; Purpose; Container; Required Files; Required For Full Memory Package Files; Manifest; Desktop Load Model; Long-Term Wiki Memory. Those headings are retrieval anchors: a crawler or LLM can decide whether the file is relevant before reading every line.

Prompt-Size And Retrieval Benefit

Keeping this material in a separate file reduces prompt pressure because an agent can load this exact unit only when its role, source site, category, or hash is relevant. The surrounding index pages point to it, while this page preserves the full content for audit and exact recall.

How To Use It

  • Humans should read the metadata first, then inspect the raw content when they need exact wording or provenance.
  • LLMs and agents should use the source site, category, hash, headings, and related files to decide whether this file belongs in the active prompt.
  • Crawlers should treat the AIWikis page as transparent evidence and follow the source URL/source reference for authority boundaries.
  • Future maintainers should regenerate this page whenever the source hash changes, then review the explanation if the role or structure changed.

Update Requirements

When this source file changes, update the raw source layer, normalized source layer, hash history, this rendered page, generated explanation, source-file inventory, changed-files report, and any source-section index that links to it.
